Snowmobile Trail & Weather Info, Updates, Rants and Raves December 26, 2006 Here today gone tomorrow- snowmobiling in the Michigan U.P. as we have come know it, is totally washed out. A December mid-month warm up brought us unseasonably (record-making) high temps and loads of rainfall. Enough rain and warm temps to completely obliterate what snow we had acquired during the first week of December.
Why not tell all your Internet friends and pass it along to them? Chances
are pretty good they'll appreciate the notice from you.
Rain, rain go away, come back when you're suppose to. An extremely unseasonable December, with above average temps up to 15 degrees has halted the snowmobile season and dampened any likelihood of a snow-filled U.P. Christmas throughout most of the Upper Peninsula. There may be the chance of snow Thursday night into Friday night, but temps are expected to turn potential snow showers into rain, freezing rain and or rain/snow mix. December 02, 2006 What a difference a day makes and what a pleasant surprise. The new snowmobile season started on a decent note and delivered plummeting cold temps and a short-order, lake effect snow event that started the initial building-block for a snowmobile trail base for northern Upper Peninsula. The lake effect event delivered up to four inches of new snowfall along the northern tier counties of Marquette, Alger and Luce counties. More snow and cold temps are expected in the next several days ahead. By the end of the weekend we could be looking at significant snowfall to signal trail groomers to start their engines. Here in Gwinn, we just caught the tail end and lucky enough to cash in on a couple of inches- hardly enough to get out and ride, but from the looks of it, doing so may only be a day or two away. I wouldn't quite yet begin hitching your trailer up... but I'd be seriously keeping my eyes and ears open. You just might want to make a mad dash UP for spill or two in the white fluff. Granted, there will be some enormous open water on some low lying trails... but plenty of fun all around. Monday, November 27, 2006 Today we received an unexpended surprise. It rained all night long and then around 12:00 noon the rain turned to a heavy, wet snowfall. We received a couple of inches... needless to say, the snowfall didn't last long. By 5:00 PM the moist wet ground and mild temps melted just about everything. Forecasters hinting towards the likelihood of snow by the weeks end. Temps are expected to plummet and quite possibly the start of developing a base on the trails. Though, it's sure going to have to get awfully cold to get the ground frozen for a solid base. We'll have to wait and see- we'll keep you posted here.
Where do we go from here? Here we are, only days away from the new snowmobile season for 2006 -2007. We've seen better season starters than this one. From the looks of things, the December 01, 2006 opener will be much better off for four wheelers than snowmobiles. November was mild, in fact on Thanksgiving Day, the temp was 15 degrees above our average- Over 50 degrees. It's not looking too good that we'll soon encounter weather cold enough to produce any snow. We'd much rather be reporting about winter weather conditions, snow events and snowmobile trail conditions than trying to come up with no-news text and content for all of our pages- all of which by the way, are eagerly waiting for input. In the meantime, we'll try our best at providing some new information as we anxiously wait for Ole Man Winter, Mother Nature and good ole Jack Frost to get off their tail ends and drag us in Winter.
