Snowmobiling in Michigan's Upper Peninsula

The Fun of Snowmobiles

by Ashley Barnard

A snowmobile is a motorized sled designed for traveling across snow-covered terrain. In order to control a snowmobile you must be in good physical form. A snowmobile is a significant initial cost and a continuing expense of fuel and repairs so bare this in mind before going out and buying one this winter.

Note that the minimum age to rent a snowmobile is 18 years, while minimum age to drive a snowmobile is 16 years old with a driver's license and a parent present. A snowmobile is not a toy and should be treated with care and respect many people have been injured in on snowmobiles and ski-doo's.

Ensure your snowmobile is properly registered and insured, a state registration sticker must be displayed in accordance with the state that the snowmobile is registered. For snowmobiles, being driven on the private property insurance is not required.

There's no doubt that a new season is just around the corner and whether you are out to have an exhilarating or just a leisurely ride this winter the fun is about to begin. On December 20th, 2006 the gates will open to another season of snowmobile access to Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks with the Snowmobiling season typically running from mid-December until April.

There are many areas around the USA where you can use your snowmobile, with northern Michigan being probably the single most popular area to snowmobile in, as the area offers an extensive amount of trails for all types of riders. For those of you that want a bit more adventure then i would recommend going to Newfoundland and crossing the snowbound wilds of Canada's easternmost province which is generally reserved for the bravest or craziest. The Lumberjack Memorial Trails Snowmobile Club is dedicated to providing the finest trails for recreational family snowmobiling.

There are over 12000 miles of trails in the USA which are maintained by more than 280 local snowmobile clubs, in eastern Idaho there are thousands of miles of trails which await both novices and experienced snowmobile and ski-doo riders alike.

If you love racing, you're going to love the action-packed features that snowmobile racing can provide ATV racing follows a successful run of Snowmobile Championship Tour events such as the youth snocross racing program offered by MWR. North Country Racing has evolved from a Polaris factory Snow-Cross Snowmobile Racing team to a full time commitment. In just a few years, team Industries Racing has become a dominant force in snow cross, and is currently the most popular form of snowmobile racing.

If you are traveling with your snowmobile to other areas a convenient method of towing it is to use a properly fitted out trailer where you can securely and safely fit your snowmobile on to.
Out of season it is best if possible to keep your snowmobile left on the trailer, as the task of manually moving a snowmobile is difficult, especially when the steering skis and power driven track are resting on a garage floor. Try to keep your snowmobile stored in a dry place and covered ready for your next winter outing of fun and racing.
