Snowmobile Facts & Information
Years gone by, a snowmobile was primarily used as an essential mode of transportation by snow-bound communities. Today it's a huge sport.
Lets talk about trail base again this year and how it tells about the trail condition.
Snow is compacted by the warm temperatures, its own weight, and the grooming process to form the snow
surface that we call the trail. Normally it can take from 12-18 inches of snow to make
an inch of
compacted snow on the trail- depending on if the snow is fluffy or wet and heavy.
Fluffy snow likes to blow off the trail after one sled runs in it and blows the 18 inches away.
Wet snow will take 12 inches or less and doesn't get kicked off the trail as easy.
In an ideal world every foot of snow would then make an inch of base that separates your
sled from the dirt underneath the snow. But because of spinning tracks, corners, drifts etc.
that very seldom happens that quickly in the real world.
So when it reads we got 6 inches of fresh snow that doesn't correlate to that much on the trail to ride on.
