Ewing Point

Ewing Point is located on the 132—acre McKeever Lake near Munising. The campsite is 2.3 miles east of Highway 13 on Forest Road 2173 (Pete’s Lake Campground Road) and is 12.5 miles south of Wetmore.

 

The trail leading from the parking area to the campsite is 650 feet.

 

Camping

There is one walk-in campsite on Ewing Point. The site, located right on the point, is a grassy area, 50 feet x 75 feet, surrounded by cedar and hemlock. A fire grill, lantern post, and picnic table are provided at the site. Drinking water must be carried in. Water is available at Pete’s Lake. Sanitary facilities are not available and the “cat” method is recommended for human waste disposal. Dig a hole at least 100 feet from water, trails and camp and dispose human waste and toilet paper into the hole then replace the dirt.

 

Swimming

The lake bottom is sandy and provides good wading. Be cautious when swimming because this area has not been checked for possible hazards.

Camping

There are 50 campsites, each with a fireplace ring and picnic table.

 

Hiking

Bruno’s Run Hiking Trail weaves throughout the Ewing Point area. The 7.25-mile trail is accessible at various locations, two of which are near the Ewing Point parking area. One trail section leads down to Grassy Lake; the other, travels along the southeastern portion of McKeever Lake.

 

Fishing

McKeever Lake is a good fishing lake for musky, pike, bass, and pan fish. For information on fishing in the Great Lakes, the inland lakes and their tributaries, contact any Hiawatha National Forest District Office or the Forest Supervisor's Office in Escanaba.

 

Hunting

Hunting opportunities exist for ruffed grouse, waterfowl, deer, and bear.

 

Boat Access

There is a boat access on the lake. The campsite itself is easily reached by boat or canoe.

 

General Information

Groceries, ice, gasoline, fishing and canoeing supplies, are available approximately a mile south on Forest Highway 13.

This site may he reserved for up to 7 days for a $10.00 administration fee. You may obtain a permit by visiting the office of the District Ranger at Munising, or writing to the District Ranger, P.O. Box 160, Munising, Michigan  49862.
