Dr Martens - A History of the Comfortable Boot
Dr Martens is brand that has a tremendous reputation and admiration. Where did this boot come from? Munich, 1945 is the answer, Dr Klaus Maertens damaged his foot whilst skiing in the Bavarian Alps. Klaus wanted to create a comfortable shoe which could be worn during the healing process -the result was a shoe which used rubber from old tires to trap air in the sole, this created an excellent cushion for the feet.

Having showed the shoes to Dr Herbert Funck an inventor and friend, Klaus began
selling the shoes in Germany. The pair decided that they need a business to
manufacture and distribute the boots. However, most produces disliked the idea
of an 'air cushion sole' and argue it would be a short lived gimmick. One
company spotted the genius of the air cushioned sole and on April 1st 1960 the
cherry red eight-eyelet boot was born, branded the 1460 - getting its name from
the date (1/4/60)
The original name for the boots 'Maertens', was deemed unsuitable for the UK market so the name was anglicized to Dr. Martens. Upon entering the market the boots were also given the famous AirWair tag. Skinheads quickly adopted the boot as their own, later Dr Martens spread to Grunge, New Wave and Punk - this affiliation with music subgenres helped to grow the word abroad and at home.
By the late 1970s the Dr Martens brand had become the iconic shoe for several youth subcultures. The popularity of this shoe has been astounding, the AirWair tag has been used to sell several styles of shoes ranging from sandals to steel cap boots. This range of boots is available all over the globe. However, it has not always been smooth sailing. In 2003, Dr Martens experienced a large drop in sales and as a result had to close the UK production facility, moving the manufacture of the boot to Thailand. This change also coincided with the end of the Dr Martens vegan friendly products.
2007 saw the Dr Martens brand return to form, with the Cobbs Lane Factory opening its doors again to produce the "Vintage" Line which is matched to the original specs. The story of this boot is a simple one of a great idea being accepting world over. Even though the original shoe was designed for comfort at work, it's clear that the AirWair line now holds a boot for any situation, all of which are durable, comfortable and reliable.
