Munising, Michigan

A small town with an estimated population of just over 2,500 located in the Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, Munising is a winter wonderland during the winter season. Here are the reasons why Munising is a great destination during the holidays.

Dog Sledding

When most people think of dog sledding, they think of Alaska. Dog sledding, however, is just one awesome activity people can engage in while visiting Munising during the winter. As if that wasn’t enough, the UP 200, a 40 teamed 240 mile dog mushing race, and the Midnight run, a 90 mile dog mushing race, take place next year on February 17th.

Ice Fishing

Fishing is an all-year round activity in Munising. During the winter, fishermen and women can partake in ice fishing in Michigan Bay’s Lake Superior, which is known for having amazing trout and salmon fishing. However, there are fishing opportunities almost everywhere you go in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula; there are tons of rivers and streams, not to mention two other great lakes, Lake Huron and Lake Michigan, in the area.

Ice Climbing

Munising is the host of the annual Michigan Ice Fest. In 2012, the festival takes place from February 2nd to the 5th.

Ice climbing is like rock climbing, except on ice which offers climbers with an entirely different surface and set of challenges.

Fresh Christmas trees

According to the Times Herald, “Michigan ranks third in the country in the number of Christmas trees harvested, and no other state produces more Christmas tree varieties. Michigan's 700 Christmas tree growers harvest about 3 million trees a year….” There aren’t many states where you can go and get a truly, fresh-cut Christmas tree, but Michigan is one of them.
